West Palm Beach, FL—A Florida appellate court this week threw out an $18.5 million award to the adult daughter of a long-time smoker who died from lung cancer, after finding the award against cigarette maker R.J. Reynolds was excessive.

Fort Lauderdale, FL—Jurors Friday awarded $650,000 in punitive damages on top of a nearly $5.5 million compensatory judgment earlier in the week to the widower of a woman with a half-century smoking habit that left her with coronary heart disease and lung cancer.
