Philip Morris & RJR Hit with $5.5M Judgment, Plus Possible Punitives, at Trial Over New York Native's Fatal Cancer

Fort Lauderdale, FL—Jurors found R.J. Reynolds and Philip Morris liable in the lung cancer death of a New York native, slapping the tobacco giants with nearly $5.5 million in compensatory damages and finding punitives potentially warranted for conspiring to hide the dangers of their cigarettes for decades.  Martin v. Smoker's Snowbird Status Debated in Trial Against Tobacco Cos. Over Fatal Cancer

Fort Lauderdale, FL—As trial opened last week against the nation's two largest tobacco companies over claims smoking killed a New York native who spent her winters in Florida, attorneys debated what fueled the woman's half-century of smoking and whether she was a sunshine state resident for purposes of a massive tobacco class action.
