Huish v. R.J. Reynolds involves John Huish, who was born in 1929. Mr. Huish started smoking cigarettes as a teenager in the mid or late 1940's, approximately 20 years before the first caution label appeared on a pack of cigarettes. Mr. Huish died of small cell lung cancer in 1993, at the age of 64. The case was brought by Mr. Huish's widow, Anna Louise Huish.

The jury in Kirkland v. R.J. Reynolds took the advice of Jones Day's Stephen Kaczyinski and awarded just $250K in punitive damages against R.J. Reynolds, the smallest punitive damages award yet in an Engle case in which punitive damages were found to be warranted.
Jones Day's Stephen Kaczynski won big for R.J. Reynolds today in Kirkland v. R.J. Reynolds when a Tampa jury awarded just $100,000 in compensatory damages to smoker Leroy Kirkland, and apportioned 90% fault to Mr. Kirkland, and 10% fault to R.J. Reynolds. The plaintiff had requested compensatory damages of $96,250,500.
